Our Newly Planted Street Trees Need Your Help

The newly planted street trees are suffering in this heat. If you have one of these trees outside your house please water it otherwise it will not survive.

The trees have a green plastic bag around them. The bag has a smaller opening which you need to find. Best to do it with a watering can. Do not pour the water down the big opening or it will splash your feet (probably welcome in this weather)

The Forestry Commission has this advice:-

Watering newly-planted trees
• In spring and summer, water new trees as often as possible.
• Once in the ground it is almost impossible to over-water a tree.
• A 2m (6ft) ‘standard’ needs at least 30 litres (about 6 gallons) a week.
• Water is heavy to carry.
Recycle your old 5 litre water bottles: they have handles and lids, and are not too heavy (5kg when full). This re-uses plastics that are difficult to recycle.
• When possible avoid evaporation by watering early or late, not in the middle of the day.

UPDATE ON CLOSURE OF TUNNEL IN CHINBROOK MEADOWS

Dear Friends,

Updates
First a couple of updates regarding the foot tunnel through the park. The latest from the foreman is that the brick work is nearly complete but they haven't been able to do the tree work yet. It is hoped that this will be done next week now (wk beg 18th) so look out for possible access closures. The trees have been checked for birds nests and none are present. I have been told there are 7 trees in total that will need removal. The ones that need removal have roots affecting the tunnel brickwork or have large branches overhanging the path.
Another query was raised concerning the lights in the tunnel. These are Lewisham Council's responsibility managed by Skanska. The lights are due for renewal "shortly".

Volunteers needed
ChART is running a Great Get Together event at the W.G. Grace Centre, Lions Close on 23rd June, 12-4pm. Please take a look at the poster attached. If you have some time to spare and would like to help out please get in touch. If you want to just come along and join in on the day you will be very welcome.
