Burglary in Ridgeway Drive

On the night of 17th January a house in Ridgeway Drive was burgled while the householder was upstairs. It is believed that the burglars used the rear access road to get into the garden and then broke in through a back door. Nearby houses have been leafletted and this leaflet is shown below.

 Whisky Galore (1949)

Starring  Basil Radford, Joan Greenwood, Catherine Lacey
Director Alexander Mackendrick
Scottish islanders try to plunder 50,000 cases of whisky from a stranded ship.
Based on a true story. The name of the real ship, that sunk Feb 5 1941 - during WWII - was S/S Politician. Having left Liverpool two days earlier, heading for Jamaica, it sank outside Eriskay, The Outer Hebrides, Scotland, in bad weather, containing 250,000 bottles of whisky. The locals gathered as many bottles as they could, before the proper authorities arrived, and even today, bottles are found in the sand or in the sea every other year.

Men in Sheds

The Men's Shed concept originates from Australia and brings together older, isolated men in a space with which they are comfortable. They can socialise and carry out activities that bring benefit to the local community and charities.

Two groups are currently running a Men in Sheds project in the London Boroughs of Bromley and Greenwich. Some planned activities include recycling second-hand materials into gardening containers, trugs, bird tables and boxes.

Men can meet up to use their existing skills, learn new skills, share ideas or just put the world to rights over a cup of tea. It's about friendship, fun and getting out.

They welcome the involvement of volunteers with an interest or experience in any of the following: sourcing recyclable items, woodwork, design, marketing or IT skills.

Become a Bromley Council’s volunteer community health champion

Bromley Council’s volunteer community health champions work hard to look out for friends and family who might need a little extra help to stay healthy.

As the temperature drops, Bromley Council’s volunteer community health champions will be working hard to look out for friends and family who might need a little extra help to stay healthy, well and warm particularly during these winter months.  The volunteers, who come from a range of backgrounds, have all been trained to work in the heart of their communities. They support people to reduce health risks through healthier lifestyles which promote better health.  Health champions also raise awareness about the right NHS or other service to use when they have a health issue to prevent unnecessary visits to A&E.  By supporting people to take better care of themselves community health champions are also helping to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions and demands on other services.
Bromley community health champions will be organising ‘Health Talks’, directing friends and neighbours to the right NHS and other local services. They will be checking on vulnerable older people in the neighbourhood to make sure they are well and sharing messages about how to stay healthy.
If you’re interested in becoming a Bromley health champion and are over 18 please contact healthchampions@bromley.gov.uk for further information.
And for advice and information on how to keep warm, safe and well this winter visit http://www.bromley.gov.uk/socialcare or the NHS Choices website.
