Dementia Awareness week

Dementia Awareness Week takes place this year between 18 and 24 May.
Research tells us dementia is one of the biggest health crises facing England with an estimated 665,000 people in this country living with the condition.  It is important those with dementia, their family and carers know where to get practical help and support.  Bromley Council funds and works closely with experts in the field to improve the care and experience of those living with dementia and is using the week to highlight the range of services and support available to them.
This includes emphasising the importance of getting an early diagnosis so people can plan for the future and understand the action they can take to maintain their health and wellbeing.  This can have a real impact on the quality of life for them and their loved ones and if you have concerns about your memory or of someone close to you, your GP is the first person to talk to.
For details of activities to support the work of various organisations see the entry on the Bromley Council website at the following link :-

What are these little containers used for?

We've noticed many of these little containers lying around in the streets. We counted six in the corner of the Burnt Ash Lane car park by the passage leading to the main road. We suspect that they are being used by young people and not for their original purpose.

Can anyone tell us what they should be used for and why young people might be using them?

LERA Annual General meeting 30th April 2014

The Annual General Meeting was well attended and started promptly at 7.30pm. The outgoing chairman Peter Skipp welcomed everyone and thanked Liz Davis for allowing LERA to hold the meeting in the church. Liz took the opportunity to remind us of the next Burnt Ash Community Fun Day which will take place on Saturday 12th July.

Copies of the Agenda, the minutes of the the 2013 AGM and the audited accounts for 2013/2014 were distributed. The minutes and accounts were taken as read.

Bob Edwards, the Bromley Street Environment Operations Manager, gave us an illuminating account of the various tasks his department carry out in keeping our streets safe and clean. He then asked for questions and there followed an series of queries which he fielded well. He emphasised the need for people to report street problems using the reporting facility on the Bromley website. To report street problems click on this link:-
http://www.bromley.gov.uk/report then choose the type of problem you want to report. If you have a mobile phone with a camera you can add a picture to the report.

Tony Isbitt, who is chairman of the Community Advisory Panel, described the aims of the panel. Its webpage can be viewed at this link:- Community Advisory Panel. Tony is taking pictures showing the progress of the works to build the new community hall and will be posting them on the website. Sergeant Wayne Page added a good overview of the role of the CAP/SNT on our local patch.

Diane Bex. LERA treasurer, gave a brief report on the finances of the association. We then moved on to the election of our new Chair to replace Peter Skipp who has guided LERA for the last six years. Peter introduced Iliya Ingram who has volunteered to take over as Chair. Iliya was proposed and seconded and members present voted to accept her unanimously. Peter then welcomed her to the post,
Pat Pattenden, the LERA secretary, then read out the names of the other members of the committee and they were voted unanimously into the post.

Peter Smith then gave a vote of thanks for Peter Skipp's work on the members' behalf. He presented Peter with a book about Bromley in the 19th century which includes references to Plaistow, some flowers for Judith Skipp and Bonios and a toy for Buddy (the dog).
Finally Councillor Peter Morgan talked about the work that the Council is having carried out to improve Bromley Town Centre and explained the reason for the diversions of traffic around the High Street.

The formal part of the meeting then closed and members were invited to partake of the refreshments and snacks. This gave an opportunity for members to talk informally to the guests and to members of the committee.
