Scam email warning for DVLA customers

Scam email warning

This scam has been around since September 2015 but a recent variation appears to include a summons to the county court for a motoring offence and attaching a receipt for a fine.  The emails may arrive in the Junk mail. DVLA are aware of the problem, and Bromley have been alerted and will alert the Courts system. The original advice below applies to this variation.

DVLA warns the public of scam emails asking you to provide your driving licence and confirm credit card details.
We’re aware that some members of the public have received emails claiming to be from DVLA which link to a website mocked up to look like a DVLA online service.
The website asks for your driving licence number and payment information, threatening that you’ll lose your driving licence if you don’t verify your details.
We don’t send emails with links to websites asking you to confirm your driving licence number or payment information. We strongly advise anyone who receives one of these or any similar email not to open the link and delete the email.
The government, led by Cabinet Office’s Government Digital Service (GDS), will continue to investigate reports of organisations which may be actively misleading users about their services or acting illegally, taking swift action when necessary. By using the online driving licence or vehicle taxtransactions on GOV.UK you can be sure that you are dealing directly with DVLA.
You can find the online driving licence and vehicle tax services in the driving licence and vehicle tax sections of GOV.UK.

Warning of a Council tax scam

Bromley Council is warning residents to be vigilant regarding a Council Tax re-banding scam being operated around the borough.
The Council has received a number reports from residents who have been contacted by a company claiming to be working for Bromley Council.  The company is offering to obtain a reduction in Council Tax banding for the householder which they say would trigger a refund in Council Tax but demands an upfront fee of £65.
Bromley Council is urging residents not to engage with the callers.  Head of Trading Standards Rob Vale said: “The company is unlikely to challenge your band and may also misrepresent your rights and obligations.  Bromley is not working with any company in respect of Council Tax banding and you can, if you wish, have your tax band checked free by contacting your local Valuation Office on 03000501501.  Under no circumstances should anyone be giving out bank details to these callers.”
Anyone who feels they have been a victim of this scam should report the incident to Action Fraud on 03001232040.

Kind regards,

Bromley Neighbourhood Watch Association

Plaistow and Sundridge SNT Newsletter March 2016

Welcome to the Plaistow and Sundridge Newsletter for the Month of March 2016.

Burglary
There were 13 reported burglaries in March.
5 where entry was gained in to the property in the following locations; Rangefield Road, Freelands Road, Southover, Portland Road, Aldermary Road, and Ridgeway Drive.
4 attempted burglaries in Ridgeway Drive, Wharton Road, Leamington Avenue.
4 Non dwelling in Farwig Lane, Babbacome Road and two on Burnt Ash Lane.
We have seen an upturn in burglaries in March, as you see there is no set pattern of locations.  However for the majority entry was gained from the back of the property. Please visit the web site below for crime prevention advice around burglaries.
Always keep your shed and garage locked and tidy away your garden tools as burglars use then to break in through patio doors and windows. Please visit www.metbumblebee.org for more information

Why might your home be targeted? Most burglaries tend to be opportunistic, rather than planned. Burglars usually choose houses that have little or no visible security. So if your home does not look secure, seems unlived in or provides unobserved access, it could be at risk. Understanding what burglars look for when choosing their target will help you indentify weak spots in your home’s security

WHAT MAKES YOUR HOME ATTRACTIVE TO BURGLARS
1.   A high front boundary
2.   Low side and rear boundaries
3.   Accessible wheelie bins
4.   No visible intruder alarm
5.   No security lighting
6.   Valuables on display
7.   Open or unsecured windows
8.   Unsecured garage or shed door
9.   Unlocked back or side gate
10. Paved path or driveway

bottom1.pngVEHICLE CRIME
In March there was 1 TDA (taking and driving away) whereby suspect was detained and arrested at scene. There were also 4 thefts from motor vehicle offences.
Vehicle crime continues to be one of our top priorities and various operations have been conducted on the ward. Although March was a good month for vehicle theft please stay vigilant and continue to look after your vehicle and its belonging as per the advice given below and on the various crime prevention web sites

Car Key Theft
Modern immobilizer systems mean that thieves now aim to steal your keys and your vehicle at the same time. You can help stop them by following these tips:
Never leave keys in the ignition
Never leave your house or car keys near a door or window
Fit a tracker device
Use your garage if you have one
You may not be insured if your vehicle is stolen having been left unsecured

 ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
We have had no other reported Anti-social behaviour on the ward however if you have experienced any please let us know or if you prefer via www.crimestoppers-uk.org or call on 0800555 111 all calls are treated anonymously.

Community Meeting
The next Police drop in surgery will be held at The Lavender Cafe, Plaistow Lane on Thursday 21st April 2016 at 15:00 - 16:00 hours.
