How to keep The Cyber-Criminals out

This message was sent via the
Bromley Neighbourhood Watch Association mailing service.
The service is NOT monitored so, if you wish to contact us, e-mail:

Dear Coordinator,

Cyber-criminals use weaknesses in software and apps to attack your devices and steal your identity. Software updates are designed to fix these weaknesses and installing them as soon as possible will keep your devices & data secure.

Software updates don’t have to get in the way of what you’re doing. You can choose to install them at night, when your device is plugged in and connected to wi-fi. You can also configure most devices to automatically install software and app updates.

For more information on how to stay secure online, visit www.cyberaware.gov.uk or follow @Cyberprotectuk on Twitter.

Burnt Ash Drama Association (BADA) presents ‘Time and Time Again’

Set in the 1970s, this charming Alan Ayckbourn comedy will have you laughing throughout.

We meet Graham (a self-made businessman with an eye for the ladies) and his downtrodden wife, Anna, at her late mother’s wake.  Anna's brother, Leonard who is recently divorced and never seems to grow up, is also lodging at their mothers' house.

The funeral appears to have been arranged by Graham's employee, Peter (the sporty, self-involved type), who visits their house often with his beautiful fiancĂ©, Joan.  Joan is quickly the focus of a lot of male attention but not everyone is happy about Cupid's arrow being shot in all directions!

Everything happens under the watchful eye of Bernard – a garden gnome!  When everyone is constantly at each other’s throats and getting the "wrong end of the stick", who will get the girl?  How will it all end?!

Come and join us as we peer through the knot-holes in the fence to see the goings on in the Baker household!

Fake TV licence refund emails

This message was sent via the
Bromley Neighbourhood Watch Association mailing service.

If you wish to contact us, e-mail:

Dear Coordinator,

Watch out for these fake TV Licensing emails.

We’ve seen a sharp increase in reports about fake TV Licensing emails claiming to offer refunds. The emails state that the refund cannot be processed due to “invalid account details”. The links provided in the emails lead to phishing websites designed to steal personal and financial details.

Always question unsolicited requests for your personal or financial information in case it’s a scam. Never automatically click on a link in an unexpected email or text.

Our Newly Planted Street Trees Need Your Help

The newly planted street trees are suffering in this heat. If you have one of these trees outside your house please water it otherwise it will not survive.

The trees have a green plastic bag around them. The bag has a smaller opening which you need to find. Best to do it with a watering can. Do not pour the water down the big opening or it will splash your feet (probably welcome in this weather)

The Forestry Commission has this advice:-

Watering newly-planted trees
• In spring and summer, water new trees as often as possible.
• Once in the ground it is almost impossible to over-water a tree.
• A 2m (6ft) ‘standard’ needs at least 30 litres (about 6 gallons) a week.
• Water is heavy to carry.
Recycle your old 5 litre water bottles: they have handles and lids, and are not too heavy (5kg when full). This re-uses plastics that are difficult to recycle.
• When possible avoid evaporation by watering early or late, not in the middle of the day.

UPDATE ON CLOSURE OF TUNNEL IN CHINBROOK MEADOWS

Dear Friends,

Updates
First a couple of updates regarding the foot tunnel through the park. The latest from the foreman is that the brick work is nearly complete but they haven't been able to do the tree work yet. It is hoped that this will be done next week now (wk beg 18th) so look out for possible access closures. The trees have been checked for birds nests and none are present. I have been told there are 7 trees in total that will need removal. The ones that need removal have roots affecting the tunnel brickwork or have large branches overhanging the path.
Another query was raised concerning the lights in the tunnel. These are Lewisham Council's responsibility managed by Skanska. The lights are due for renewal "shortly".

Volunteers needed
ChART is running a Great Get Together event at the W.G. Grace Centre, Lions Close on 23rd June, 12-4pm. Please take a look at the poster attached. If you have some time to spare and would like to help out please get in touch. If you want to just come along and join in on the day you will be very welcome.

UPDATE ON CLOSURE OF TUNNEL IN CHINBROOK MEADOWS

Please see the email below from the Chair of the Friends of Chinbrook Meadows with latest information on the closure of the tunnel which has now been delayed until next week

Thursday, May 31, 2018 12:08:37 PM
Dear Friends,

I spoke to the supervisor at the tunnel in the park today and gather that the closure days are not likely to be till next week now.

Apparently they will have to liaise with track side as the line will have to be closed too while work on the trees is carried out. He assured me that information will go up at least 2 days in advance.
They are continuing to work on the brickwork of the tunnel at the moment but that  doesn't involve closing the access.

Please let me know of any problems.

Closure of the Foot Tunnel in Chinbrook Meadows

IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT CLOSURE OF TUNNEL IN CHINBROOK MEADOWS

from the Chair of the Friends of Chinbrook Meadows

I have just had a note from Glendale to say the Network Rail will be closing the foot tunnel that goes under the railway over the next few days.

I know this will be a serious inconvenience to people who use this route regularly. The information I have says the tunnel will be closed between 10am and 4pm on Wednesday 30th and Thursday 31st this week.

Other information recently received - the railings and playground equipment will be re-painted over the next few months starting on Friday 1st June using community payback teams.

YET another telephone scam this one from TPS

This message was sent via the
Bromley Neighbourhood Watch Association mailing service.
if you wish to contact us, e-mail:  info@bromleynwa.org.uk

Fraudsters are cold-calling victims, falsely stating that they are calling from one of the well-known UK telecommunication service providers. They call victims claiming to provide a ‘Telephone Preference Service’ - an enhanced call-barring service, which includes barring international call centres.

The fraudsters ask victims to confirm/provide their bank account details, informing them that there is a one-off charge for the service. Victims instead see monthly debits deducted from their accounts, which they have not authorised. The fraudsters often target elderly victims.

In all instances, direct debits are set up without following proper procedure. The victim is not sent written confirmation of the direct debit instruction, which is supposed to be sent within three days.

On occasions when victims attempted to call back, the telephone number provided by the fraudster was either unable to be reached or the victim’s direct debit cancellation request was refused.

Protect yourself:
  • There is only one Telephone Preference Service (TPS). The TPS is the only official UK 'do-not-call' register for opting out of live telesales calls. It is FREE to sign-up to the register. TPS never charge for registration. You can register for this service at http://www.tpsonline.org.uk.
  • You will receive postal confirmation of genuine direct debits. If you notice unauthorised payments leaving your account, you should contact your bank promptly.
  • Always be wary of providing personal information, or confirming that personal information the caller already claims to hold is correct. Always be certain that you know who you talking to. If in doubt hang up immediately.
If you have been affected by this, or any other type of fraud, report it to Action Fraud by visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.

Flight ticket fraud alert

This message was sent via the Bromley Neighbourhood Watch Association mailing service.
if you wish to contact them, e-mail:  info@bromleynwa.org.uk

Dear Coordinator,
Victims have reported booking tickets via websites or a “popular” ticket broker, only to discover that after payment via bank transfer or electronic wire transfer, the tickets/booking references received are counterfeit. In some cases, all communications between the company or broker and the victim have been severed.
Fraudsters are targeting individuals who are seeking to travel to African nations and the Middle East, particularly those wishing to travel in time for popular public and religious holidays.

Prevention Advice:

  • Pay safe: Be cautious if you're asked to pay directly into a private individual’s bank account. Paying by direct bank transfer is like paying by cash – the money is very difficult to trace and is not refundable. Wherever possible, pay by credit card or a debit card.
  • Conduct research on any company you’re considering purchasing tickets from; for example, are there any negative reviews or forum posts by previous customers online? Don’t just rely on one review - do a thorough online search to check the company’s credentials.
  • Check any company website thoroughly; does it look professional? Are there any spelling mistakes or irregularities? There should be a valid landline phone number and a full postal address so that the company can be contacted. Avoid using the site if there is only a PO Box address and mobile phone number, as it could be difficult to get in touch after you buy tickets. PO Box addresses and mobile phone numbers are easy to change and difficult to trace.
  • Be aware that purchasing tickets from a third party, particularly when initial contact has been made via a social media platform can be incredibly risky.
  • If tickets to your intended destination appear cheaper than any other vendor, always consider this; if it looks too good to be true, it probably is!
  • Look for the logo: Check whether the company is a member of a recognised trade body such as ABTA or ATOL. You can verify membership of ABTA online, at www.abta.com.
  • If you have been affected by this, or any other type of fraud, report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040, or visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk.

Works undertaken by Network Rail to Trees Sunday 4th February

You might have seen the Facebook traffic on Sunday about the work that Network Rail carried out. There has been correspondence between Alex Margolies and the LBB and they are dealing with it.
Stephen Hodges has sent an e mail to Chris Ryder, the Principal Tree Office for the Council, and this is set out below.

Dear Chris

I am writing to you as Chair of the Links Estate Residents Association ( LERA)

I have seen correspondence between you and Alex Margolies concerning the work undertaken by Network Rail on Sunday 4 February on trees that were subject to a Tree Preservation Order (TPO). Thanks for responding so promptly to Alex on this.

I am also aware that Council Officers visited the site Wednesday to assess the situation and observed that clearance pruning to approximately 6 metres. I should be grateful if you could advise me what the implication of this are. Is this permitted under the TPO?

As you are aware residents are very upset that Network Rail carried out this work in what appears to be a possible contravention of the TPO. There appeared to be no consultation, it was clearly planned in advance and the workers on site were dismissive and rude to residents when they were confronted with complaints about the noise and the work they were undertaking. You may be aware that LERA operates a Facebook page and we have many comments and complaints as well as evidence from residents during the time that the work was being carried out.

I look forward to your comments. I would hope that should it be established that Network Rail breached the TPO and the evidence and comments from residents suggest that they have, then the strongest action possible should be taken.

Yours sincerely

Stephen Hodges
Chair of LERA

Residents' Association Round Table Meetings - Council budget 2018-19

Dear Residents’ Association Member,

Thank you so much to those of you who came along to our Residents’ Association Round Table meetings before Christmas in response to the Leader of the Council’s invitation to talk about priorities for the borough.

I now have pleasure in drawing your attention to the draft 2018/19 budget and update on the Council’s financial strategy 2019/20 to 2021/22 which contains a report of the topics covered at these meetings and the public meeting at appendix 10.

This report will go to the Executive meeting held at the Civic Centre from 7pm on Wednesday, 10 January 2018. PDS Committees’ views will also be sought and reported back to the next meeting of the Executive, prior to the Executive making recommendations to Council on the 2018/19 Council Tax and Adult Social Care precept levels.

I do hope you will find this of interest.
