Bromley Council have obtained funding from the department of health to support the Cold Weather Plan this winter. This plan aims to protect people’s health through the cold winter months and Snow Friends will be a valuable partner in achieving this aim.
Cold weather results in an increase of heart attacks and strokes, respiratory illness, influenza, hypothermia and falls and injuries. Volunteers are well placed in their communities to be able to identify vulnerable people in the neighbourhood who may require further assistance and to raise awareness of the risks of winter cold. Age UK Bromley are acting as the central referral team and can provide advice and assistance on benefit entitlement and other interventions which include shopping services, after care hospital discharge services and grants and loans available for warm homes, healthy people.
The funding has enabled Bromley to launch a Voucher Scheme to assist Snow Friends who go that extra mile to support their elderly neighbours during snow episodes. If you are able to collect a few groceries or provide transport for your neighbour to enable them to attend a medical appointment, please contact me, Aaron Rumney. There is a limited supply of £5 vouchers available to help cover your transport costs.
