Queen's Diamond Jubilee weekend 2-5th June 2012

The following is a synopsis of events planned over the weekend. The events are planned by external groups and full policing operations are in place for each day.

Main information on events can be found at the Department for Culture Media and Sport at:   www.culture.gov.uk
Road and travel information at: www.tfl.gov.uk/gettingaround/23611.aspx
Met Police: www.met.police.uk

Dates:
Saturday 2nd June 2012  - Football friendly England v Belgium at Wembley
                                                - Beating the Retreat Horseguards

Sunday 3rd June 2012     - River Thames Pageant, Chelsea to Tower Bridge
There will be a large scale security operation in place in place from 7am with the closures and searches of the bridges. Large areas of Central London from Chelsea through to Tower Bridge will be affected during the day.
Bridges will have various closures in place and many will have viewing areas where the flotilla can be viewed by invited guests only:
1.  Invited guests only:
Albert, Lambeth, Westminster, Jubilee (Hungerford), Blackfriars, Millennium and Tower.
2.  Bridges where pedestrians can cross but stopping to view the pageant is banned:
     Battersea and Chelsea.
3.   Bridges where traffic can cross (except 3pm to 5.50pm) during the pageant:
      Vauxhall, Waterloo, Southwark and London.

It is expected that Central London will be busy with 1000 boats on the river and the opportunity to see this once in a lifetime event. A number of premises overlooking the river have already identified that they are holding events. They will need to consider access routes to their buildings.
Businesses will need to consider their logistical support and areas such as staff travel. The main information will be available:

Monday 4th June 2012     - Concert in the Mall

The main area for the concert is at the Queen Victoria Memorial at the front of Buckingham Palace which is a ticket only event. The area will extend back down the Mall towards St James Palace.

The remainder of the Mall will be public space with large screen showing the concert. Overflow areas have been developed in St James Park and Hyde Park so the Central London area will be very busy with a number of roads closed.

The concert starts late afternoon and finishes later in the evening with the lighting of the Ceremonial Beacon. Crowds form the Mall and parks are expected to be heavy and there may have to be adhoc road closures put in place to facilitate movement of people safely.

Again it is advisable that businesses check the website for information on travel and live updates. The TfL website does give detail on trains running and advice.

Tuesday 5th June 2012    - Procession from Buckingham Palace to St Pauls                                                and back via the Palace of Westminster

The main ceremonial event for the weekend is a procession by Her Majesty the Queen and member of the Royal Family from Buckingham Palace to a service at St Pauls Cathedral late morning.

There will be major road closures between The Mall and St Pauls Cathedral along the route of he Strand, and in areas around St Pauls, Mansion House and Guildhall. The route then heads back along the Strand and down to the Palace of Westminster in the afternoon.

There will then be a ceremonial route back from the Palace of Westminster to Buckingham Palace with the associated balcony event and a flypast late afternoon.

Again it is anticipated there will be large crowds in London, major road closures mean changes to bus routes and crowd dispersal at the end of the event will have to be managed.

Key messages for the police
·       At the heart of all our operational planning is the fact that this is a weekend of celebrations - and we know thousands of people will want to come and play a part in it;

·       Given that these are events involving the Royal Family, Government and heads of states there will be the right security measures in place

·       However, all our officers have will be briefed to be unobtrusive - yet alert and swift to respond if something were to happen;

·       Finally, we have vast experience of delivering ceremonial and large scale events and will use this to guide our policing of this event.  We are looking forward to this event, and are incredibly proud to play our part in this celebration for HM the Queen.

·       Ensure you are signed up to Neighbourhood Link to receive messages and updates    www.neighbourhoodlink.met.police.uk

·       Sign up to follow us on Twitter at     @MetPoliceEvents OR  @metpoliceuk

Key advice
·                Travel - plan your journeys carefully. Ensure you know train services
and times of trains for your journey home. This will be important for the
concert event on the 4th June.

·                Large crowds are expected so allow time for your journeys for each of
          the days.

Community Day News

For the most recent news about the community day 14th July you can look at the Facebook page at :-

Recent items on the page include :-

  • There's a glimmer of hope that we might get a trailer for our stage. I spoke to a very nice man today who said he would give the idea some thought and get back to me. Oh lets hope it comes right.
  • We are having a leaflet and banner being designed for the day. When it's done I hope you won't mind if I make it available to download for you to send to your family and friends in the hope that they may join us on the day too.
  • I heard today that Jemca, the Toyota showroom will now take a pitch. This is great as they are our largest local dealer and it's right that they support their local community. I wonder if the other two major showrooms will lend their support as well?
  • We have thirty pitch holders now and a number of them are taking a double spread. This is in addition to the inflatable rides and the children's fairground rides.
  • When you next go shopping please try to shop at Waitrose in Burnt Ash Lane. They are supporting us by taking a pitch and they have a green token community box. Please support us by dropping your token into our section. It means we can afford to do more. Many many thanks.
LERA members please do try to collect the green tokens when you shop at Waitrose and put them in the Community Day section.

Dyson repair offer and other telephone scams

LERA residents are warned of a telephone scam claiming to come from a Dyson service company. The person who made an unsolicited call to us sounded very believable to start with. He implied that he worked on behalf of Dyson and claimed that these vacuum cleaners needed regular servicing to avoid breaking down. He described how his company would completely dismantle, clean and change all worn parts and leave it like new. The amount quoted was £70 although Trading Standards Officers say the get you to sign up for contracts costing £170. We never take up offers from cold-callers and as our Dyson was still under warranty and they have always replaced any part under their warranty. Dyson state that they never call cold members of the public and that they do not give out phone numbers to other companies.

Yesterday we had five other calls mainly from call centres. Two from "Microsoft" telling us that our computer had many errors or had been taken over by a virus which they could put right if we let them take over our computer; one from a "security" firm who wanted to give us £800 of security equipment if we told them details of our security arrangements; one asking us if we had claimed for free home insulation and one offering to reclaim mi-sold PPI insurance.

If you get any of these (in spite signing up of the telephone preferences system) hang up or preferably tell them to hold on while you turn the cooker off and wait until they give up.

Bromley Police have launched a new Twitter feed - @MPSBromley - to keep the community more in touch with the policing of the borough. The Twitter feed which was launched today will act as a route to provide up-to-date information for the local community.

They will post updates between 7am and 3.30pm Monday to Friday and include public safety information, crime prevention information, crime appeals, local updates and success stories, along with other information which the Metropolitan Police and local residents consider important.

Borough Commander Steph Roberts said “I am delighted that we now have a dedicated Twitter service allowing us to communicate to our residents and followers about the work we do. @MPSBromley is still in its early days but our followers are growing and the response so far has been very positive. If want to be kept up-to-date about policing in Bromley why not start following us now”.

Followers are reminded that they cannot report crime over Twitter, they must call either 999 for emergencies or 101 for non-emergency calls.

If you follow us, you can expect tweets covering some or all of the following:
  • Operational updates about the policing of events
  • News about how the MPS is policing the borough, major criminal investigations and prosecutions.

Burnt Ash Library Reading Group May

The next meeting at Burnt Ash Library is on Thursday 31st May at 2.15 pm and everyone is welcome. The book to be discussed is

The secret life of bees by Sue Monk Kidd.

Lily has grown up believing she accidentally killed her mother when she was four. She not only has her own memory of holding the gun, but her father's account of the event. Now fourteen, she yeams for her mother, and for forgiveness. Living on a peach farm in South Carolina with her father, she has only one friend: Rosaleen, a black servant whose sharp exterior hides a tender heart. South Carolina in the sixties is a place where segregation is still considered a cause worth fighting for. When racial tension explodes one summer afternoon, and Rosaleen is arrested and beaten, Lily is compelled to act. Fugitives from justice and from Lily's harsh and unyielding father, they follow a trail left by the woman who died ten years before. Finding sanctuary in the home of three beekeeping sisters, Lily starts a journey as much about her understanding of the world, as about the mystery surrounding her mother.

Hazardous parking near the railway bridge in New Street Hill

There is an increasing problem resulting from cars parking opposite numbers 17 - 25 in New Street Hill.

Although allotment holders have a gated entrance into the allotments some are parking in this part of the road and some people may be parking their cars here and going elsewhere to work. At the moment there are often builders vehicles parked outside the house which is being renovated. Residents of houses around these parked cars are having problems reversing safely out of their drives.

In addition, on business days, the spaces in the area provided on the other side of the bridge are fully used. Vehicles coming under the bridge may end up on the wrong side of the road and  are confronted with cars parked on both sides of the road and other cars coming towards the bridge from the estate.

On Monday a resident's car from 17 New Street Hill was hit due to the congested road. All drivers using this section of road need to take extra care to avoid any further accidents.
