Queen's Diamond Jubilee weekend 2-5th June 2012

The following is a synopsis of events planned over the weekend. The events are planned by external groups and full policing operations are in place for each day.

Main information on events can be found at the Department for Culture Media and Sport at:   www.culture.gov.uk
Road and travel information at: www.tfl.gov.uk/gettingaround/23611.aspx
Met Police: www.met.police.uk

Dates:
Saturday 2nd June 2012  - Football friendly England v Belgium at Wembley
                                                - Beating the Retreat Horseguards

Sunday 3rd June 2012     - River Thames Pageant, Chelsea to Tower Bridge
 There will be a large scale security operation in place in place from 7am with the closures and searches of the bridges. Large areas of Central London from Chelsea through to Tower Bridge will be affected during the day.
Bridges will have various closures in place and many will have viewing areas where the flotilla can be viewed by invited guests only:
1.  Invited guests only:
     Albert, Lambeth, Westminster, Jubilee (Hungerford), Blackfriars, Millennium and Tower.
2.  Bridges where pedestrians can cross but stopping to view the pageant is banned:
     Battersea and Chelsea.
3.   Bridges where traffic can cross (except 3pm to 5.50pm) during the pageant:
      Vauxhall, Waterloo, Southwark and London.

It is expected that Central London will be busy with 1000 boats on the river and the opportunity to see this once in a lifetime event. A number of premises overlooking the river have already identified that they are holding events. They will need to consider access routes to their buildings.
Businesses will need to consider their logistical support and areas such as staff travel. The main information will be available:

Monday 4th June 2012     - Concert in the Mall

The main area for the concert is at the Queen Victoria Memorial at the front of Buckingham Palace which is a ticket only event. The area will extend back down the Mall towards St James Palace.

The remainder of the Mall will be public space with large screen showing the concert. Overflow areas have been developed in St James Park and Hyde Park so the Central London area will be very busy with a number of roads closed.

The concert starts late afternoon and finishes later in the evening with the lighting of the Ceremonial Beacon. Crowds form the Mall and parks are expected to be heavy and there may have to be adhoc road closures put in place to facilitate movement of people safely.

Again it is advisable that businesses check the website for information on travel and live updates. The TfL website does give detail on trains running and advice.

Tuesday 5th June 2012    - Procession from Buckingham Palace to St Pauls                                                and back via the Palace of Westminster

The main ceremonial event for the weekend is a procession by Her Majesty the Queen and member of the Royal Family from Buckingham Palace to a service at St Pauls Cathedral late morning.

There will be major road closures between The Mall and St Pauls Cathedral along the route of he Strand, and in areas around St Pauls, Mansion House and Guildhall. The route then heads back along the Strand and down to the Palace of Westminster in the afternoon.

There will then be a ceremonial route back from the Palace of Westminster to Buckingham Palace with the associated balcony event and a flypast late afternoon.

Again it is anticipated there will be large crowds in London, major road closures mean changes to bus routes and crowd dispersal at the end of the event will have to be managed.

Key messages for the police
·       At the heart of all our operational planning is the fact that this is a weekend of celebrations - and we know thousands of people will want to come and play a part in it;

·       Given that these are events involving the Royal Family, Government and heads of states there will be the right security measures in place

·       However, all our officers have will be briefed to be unobtrusive - yet alert and swift to respond if something were to happen;

·       Finally, we have vast experience of delivering ceremonial and large scale events and will use this to guide our policing of this event.  We are looking forward to this event, and are incredibly proud to play our part in this celebration for HM the Queen.

Key advice
·                Travel - plan your journeys carefully. Ensure you know train services
          and times of trains for your journey home. This will be important for the
          concert event on the 4th June.

·                Large crowds are expected so allow time for your journeys for each of
          the days.
